Carpenter Family - Dryden Henderson - Idle gossip

I found this article on 21 January 2023, on Dryden Henderson Carpenter's page in Ancestry.com. Much thanks from Carole Heller who originally shared this clip on 24 September 2018,This article reads as:

IDLE GOSSIP AT BASE OF CHARGES

D.H. CARPENTER RELEASED FROM CUSTODY WHEN FACTS WERE BROUGHT OUT.

D.H. Carpenter of  Roscoe, who was taken in charge by Constable Reed Friday afternoon on complaint of Leonard Geishert of this city, was released from custody yesterday afternoon when it was established that gossip instead of facts were at the basis of the prosecution.

The information charging Mr. Carpenter with harboring Rose Geishart contrary to the wishes of her mother was constructed faultily and this, together with the failure of the charges to stand up, resulted in an order for the release of Carpenter.

Mr. Carpenter in explaining the presence of the girl in his home, declares Rose Geishert is a sister of his wife and as such had a perfect right to visit in the house. He further asserts his relations with the girl were perfectly proper.

"The girl is of a friendly nature and when I accompanied her to the car after visits at our house she would turn her cheek for a kiss on bidding me goodby. This was in public and while innocent in itself: doubtless started the gossip that resulted in the baseless charges."
Mr. Carpenter resided in Rockford for several months and enjoyed a good reputation. Friends are glad to know that the charges against him failed of substantiation.
